A “No Work Experience” Mom

For most of my adult life, I have been a stay-at-home mom. I finished my Bachelors degree in Computer Studies while taking care of my first daughter. Now, I’m pursing my Master’s degree in Healthcare Admin while taking care of my second daughter. We recently just moved back to the states after being overseas for 11 years, and purchased our first home. Even though I hate the feeling of someone else raising my daughter, I feel like I need to help out with the bills. We have all these new bills that we never had before, and it would be nice to not live paycheck to paycheck.

I started my job hunt in July. I applied for four different positions in healthcare administration. I have NO WORK EXPERIENCE. I haven’t had any since 2008. I have volunteer experience but apparently, that doesn’t count. I also have a bachelors degree and pursuing a masters degree but apparently, they don’t give a crap about that either. Two of the four positions contacted me within a few days and said upon reviewing my resume, they need to decline. Yup! They declined me before even meeting me!! They didn’t even give me a chance to prove myself.

I joined a local facebook page for people seeking jobs in our city. According to many members of the group, the job market here is “the worst”. They said it’s all about who you know. If not, you better have some work experience.

How do you get work experience if companies won’t even hire you to gain experience. Having a college degree here doesn’t mean anything. All those sleepless nights of writing papers and studying for exams is for nothing. I don’t have work experience, so I can’t even get an interview.

I’m a 34 year old stay-at-home mom, and I have never felt so lost before. I chose to stay home with my babies, so I could raise them myself. Now, I’m getting penalized for not having any work experience. If only being a stay-at-home mom was valid experience.
